Greetings beautiful people
Last night me and the crew attended the Janelle Monae’ show at St.Andrews Hall in downtown Detroit. After pre show cocktails, we were treated to a rock soul experience I won’t soon forget.
Janelle performed songs mostly from her upcoming project “The Archandroid”, and even though I didn’t know most of the material, I was feeling it. By the end of her opening song, which lasted about 15 minutes, I was pouring sweat. Phiph Rocka and I danced so much we almost forgot we were at a show. By the time she performed “Tightrope” the place was in a frenzy. Janelle gave us theatrics, dance moves, killer vocals, all without ever once acknowledging the crowd. She came to throw down, not to kiss up to an audience. The show closed with “Many Moons” in disappointing climax, not that it was bad, but we wanted more songs! They never came.
Me and Ju discussed this show from previous shows we’ve seen her in. We both agree she’s evolved from a small soul, punk rock set up to a presentation that might require a stadium to bring the concept to fruition.
After the show we were on to the next. We drove to historic Lafayette Coney Island for a late night meal. For those who aren’t down with its history, it’s featured in the opening sequence to the HBO’s “Hung”. We had laughs, great conversation, good/cheap food, and memories of a great night. Thank you to all parties involved for rocking out and being real. All in all a great night at Studio 54!
Until next time people, I’m go keep on tipping on that tightrope!
